Eastern Oregon Students rank first & second at the American Legion High School Scholarship Program State Contest

SALEM – Two Eastern Oregon high school students recently placed at the top of the annual American Legion High School Scholarship Program contest, hosted this past Saturday (March 22) at Post 136 in Salem. According to Maria Del Socorro Tye, Kruse Post 72 Commander, this year’s Department of Oregon winners were Kylee More from Enterprise High School, and Mark Saunders, a homeschooled student from Vale. Saunders won 1st place, receiving a $3,500 dollar scholarship, while Moore came in 2nd place, earning a $2,500 dollar scholarship. 

Leading up to the Department of Oregon contest, the two also participated in contests at the post level and district level. Saunders will now move on to the national level contest later this year in May. During the recent contest in Salem, a delegation of American Legion representatives from the Wallowa County region also heralded Kylee Moore and her mother Joy when they arrived. This delegation, as listed by Tye, was comprised of:

  • Randy J. Tye, District 6 Commander
  • Aaron Wetterling, 1st Vice Commander District 6, Post 37 Commander, and Department of Oregon Oratorical High School Scholarship Committee Member. 
  • Mary Ward, President of  District 6 and Margaret Wetterling served as a judge and is President of the Post 37 Auxiliary. 
  • Maria D. Tye, Kruse Post 72 Commander and Department of Oregon Public Relations Chairwoman.
