UNION – (Release from Eastern Oregon Livestock Show) The Eastern Oregon Livestock Show has officially announced its 2023 Grand Marshal, Union Resident and longtime business owner Scotty Baker. In their announcement, Eastern Oregon Livestock gave a bit of background on Mr. Baker:
“Lyman (Scotty) Baker was born in Burns Oregon on June 7th, 1931. He was raised on a ranch, 6 miles from the town of Burns. He walked 1 ½ miles to an old 1 room county school and attended school in Burns until his Junior year of High School. His family moved to Union, OR in 1948 and he attended his final year of high school and graduated from Union High School in 1949. He married Charlotte Cadwell in 1953 and they had 2 boys, Mike and Sam. Scotty purchased his ranch that he still lives on today in 1953. He worked at the Union Sawmill as a Millwright and Foreman for 20 years. In 1977, Scotty, along with C.W. Hoffman, and Allen Chase started a business they called Eagle Truck & Machine in La Grande, OR. Allen ran the truck shop and Scotty ran the machine shop.
In 1979 Scotty designed and built the first motorized, radio controlled, sky carriage for line logging. He continued to build and design different models of sky carriages and ran the machine shop for Eagle Truck & Machine until 1998 when he decided to form his own business which he called Eagle Carriage & Machine. Scotty continued to work until 2011 when he turned the business over to his son Sam and retired to his ranch in Union. Throughout his years as a business owner, Scotty has taken great pride in supporting the youth at the EOLS and Union County Fair market auctions. He has spent many EOLS Saturdays over the years with his hand in the air supporting the youth with their market projects, it’s something his son Sam still does to this day. Scotty will turn 92 years old this year during the week of Stock Show and is honored to be recognized as this year’s Grand Marshal.”
