EASTERN OREGON – The U.S. Forest Service has announced that 33 Oregon Counties will receive a combined total of $45,656,904 in funding as part of the Secure Rural Schools Program. This forest service initiative provides funds to public schools, roads and other municipal services throughout the Pacific Northwest in addition to supporting forest health and wildfire mitigation in rural areas. In the forest service release, acting regional director for the Pacific Northwest Liz Berger stated:
“Initiatives like the Secure Rural Schools program are critical in helping the Forest Service provide support to boost rural economies in our region. In addition to the allowances for roads and schools, this funding goes toward the development of community wildfire protection plans and reimburses counties for emergency services on national forests.”
Of the total funding, $7,596,602.88 will go toward communities in Eastern Oregon. The individual funding by county is as follows:
Baker County: $841,859.75
Grant County: $3,546,761.41
Harney County: $1,345,804.25
Malheur County: $726.62
Umatilla: $95,182.42
Union: $698,635.96
Wallowa: $1,040,632.47
