UNION COUNTY – Union County Sheriff Cody Bowen presented Dustin Nipper with the Outstanding Citizen Award yesterday for his heroic actions that saved the lives of a mother and her children recently.
Sheriff Bowen presented Nipper with a certificate as well as a Department Challenge Coin. Sheriff Bowen noted that this is one of only two coins that has been given to a private citizen.
The certificate reads as follows:
“Outstanding Citizen Award
On Behalf of the Union County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to take the time to recognize your actions. On April 13, 2023 at about 1410 hours, This office was dispatched to a report of a careless driver driving on Highway 30 headed to the I-84 on ramp past Gangloff Park. Your quick action and lack of regard for your own safety led you to place a vehicle in-front of the careless driving vehicle and bring it to a stop. After investigation it was determined the driver was suffering from a potential life-threatening medical event. The vehicle was also occupied by children who most certainly would have been injured or worse if the vehicle had crashed. We have determined your selfless action saved lives, for that we extend our sincerest gratitude.
Sheriff Cody Bowen”
After thanking Bowen, Nipper noted that without the child yelling for help he may not have jumped into action the way he did.
