HERMISTON – Mayor Dave Drotzmann worked closely with the Oregon Legislature as it worked to fix Oregon’s drug decriminalization law. He came away from the experience pleased by his interaction with legislative leaders as the president of the League of Oregon Cities.

“We worked with our public safety officers as well as our counties to come up with some recommendations,” he said. “Their recommendations for the bill are almost exactly what we asked for.”

Drotzmann said that doesn’t mean Measure 110 is fixed because the law that was narrowly approved by voters is complex.

“I’m not saying it’s the silver bullet that’s going to cure it all,” he said of House Bill 4002. “We may be back in 2025 working on some tweaks.”

The bill passed the House of Representatives Thursday. It awaits Senate approval and the signature of Gov. Tina Kotek to become law. Both area legislators in the house, Rep. Bobby Levy (R-Echo) and Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) voted in favor of it.
