NORTHEAST OREGON – As the summer season kicks into high gear, authorities are urging residents and visitors alike to understand the grave dangers posed by impaired driving and to make responsible choices to ensure their safety and the well-being of others on the road.
With longer days and a myriad of outdoor events, summertime often brings an increase in alcohol consumption and social gatherings. Unfortunately, this also leads to a rise in the number of individuals who choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, putting themselves and others at risk.
According to the state, every year in Oregon, approximately 25,000 people are arrested for DUII, 40% of all traffic deaths are a direct result of people driving under the influence of alcohol or some other intoxicating substance. Driving under the influence of intoxicants is a crime, a deadly choice and a fully preventable tragedy.
The risks associated with drunk driving are not limited to physical harm. Legal repercussions such as license suspension, heavy fines, and possible jail time can severely impact individuals convicted of DUII offenses. Moreover, the emotional toll on families and loved ones affected by these preventable accidents cannot be understated.
One man from La Grande, who wished to remain anonymous, reached out to Elkhorn Media Group to share his recent experience of getting arrested for DUII and to warn others about the dangers of drunk driving.. He said he drove while intoxicated and crashed, injuring his friend.
“This experience has just made me feel like the worst person on the planet and if I could I obviously would have just stayed home that night. I can’t even look at myself in the mirror anymore because I hurt my best friend”
To address this ongoing issue, authorities emphasize the importance of planning ahead and making responsible choices. If individuals plan to consume alcohol, it is crucial to designate a sober driver, use public transportation, or arrange alternative means of getting home safely.
Community involvement is also key to curbing drunk driving. Friends and family members are encouraged to intervene if they suspect someone is about to drive under the influence and offer alternative solutions, such as calling a taxi or arranging for a sober ride.
As summer festivities continue to entice Oregonians to unwind and enjoy the season, it is essential to remember that the only way to truly ensure everyone’s safety is by making responsible choices. By refraining from driving while impaired and encouraging others to do the same, we can protect lives, safeguard our communities, and make this summer a memorable one for all the right reasons.
Remember: if you drink, don’t drive. Together, we can make a difference and prevent senseless tragedies on Oregon’s roads.
