Dog killed in recent rollover incident near Baker City

BAKER COUNTY – Despite advances in highway safety and automotive design, violent, often fatal crashes still occur with relative frequency. Sometimes, the casualties of these incidents are not people, but rather domestic animals that happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A recent, and rather violent, crash near Baker City sadly resulted in the death of a single dog that was riding along. Thankfully, no other fatalities were reported.

The incident specifically took place on Monday, March 4, at roughly 4:10 a.m. along I-84 Eastbound near milepost 309, roughly 5 miles southeast of Baker City. The full Oregon State Police description of the incident is as follows:

β€œThe Oregon State Police were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover crash involving a Chevy Trailblazer. The Trailblazer left 1-84 (EB) by way of the left shoulder and began rolling in the median. It is not clear how many times the vehicle rolled. There was a dog in the vehicle which was ejected and ultimately died on scene.

The vehicle came to an uncontrolled rest in the median partially wrapped up in the cable barrier. It was unclear to the Trooper how many feet of cable barrier was damaged during this event. The responding Trooper was advised the male driver was possibly DUII, The driver was transported by ground ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Baker City, Oregon to be treated. The Trooper requested a non-preference tow to remove the Trailblazer and Blue Mountain Towing responded to the scene to remove the vehicle and the dog.

The Trooper applied for and was granted a search warrant to collect blood samples from the driver. The Trooper collected the blood samples from the hospital and secured them into evidence. The driver was cited for DUII, Open Container & Failure to Maintain Lane. The driver’s girlfriend was provided the information regarding the location of the vehicle and the dog so they could make arrangements to claim both.”

The driver of the vehicle was identified by OSP as Jason Lee Hansen of New Plymouth Idaho. He was cited by OSP for DUII- Intoxicants.
