UMATILLA – The Umatilla Police Department responded to a reported altercation Friday at 5 p.m. at Lifeways McNary Place, a secure residential treatment facility providing long-term psychiatric care.

Upon arrival, police learned that a resident identified as Jacob Verlo allegedly entered the private room of another resident and physically assaulted and injured the man. Law enforcement learned that following that, Verlo fled the premises, climbing over an exterior fence.

“Law enforcement personnel from both the Umatilla Police Department and the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office conducted a comprehensive search for Mr. Verlo,” Umatilla Police Chief Ronald C. Bridge reported in a news release. “He was apprehended at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Highway 395 while walking toward Hermiston.”

Verlo was taken into custody without further incident. He was booked into the Umatilla County Jail on charges of fourth-degree assault and strangulation.
