District G Lions hold first cabinet meeting, propose new Wallowa club

EASTERN OREGON – Lions Clubs across Eastern Oregon are staying busy, as district 36-G hosted its first cabinet meeting with Governor David Nevin in Hermiston recently. Updates from the meeting shared by local Elgin Lions club member Gerlad Hopkins include a $15,000 grant from Lions International to the district for disaster relief, new proposed Lions clubs in Wallowa and Maupin, and updates on hearing aid technologies and membership numbers.

Governor David Nevin held his fist Cabinet Meeting in Hermiston with a variety of topics discussed. Primary among the subjects was the success of a grant for $15,000 from Lions’ Clubs International allocated to the district for disaster relief from the fires. The grant, submitted by PDG Pete Runnels, allocated $500 per club in the district with funds sent to RFPA or RFPD to cover expenses such as fuel, food and water, or other legitimate expenditures to agencies within the district.
Cabinet members asked the governor to submit a proposal that one state meeting be held and to eliminate a District G meeting during the year. The proposal included having the District G meeting at a section of the state meeting, scheduled in McMinnville April 23rd. Included in that discussion, Nevin said they are looking at plans to start two new clubs in Wallowa and Maupin, as well as exploration of a club in Dufer.
PCC Phyllis Carlin reported on her International Director’s campaign and the need to focus on members. Within the Multiple District of Oregon and California, there has been a loss of 600 Lions since 2020 and over 200 in District G.
Reading Specialist, Verna Taylor discussed new improved options for hearing aids through AI options. PDG Gerald Hopkins presented a proposal for a video contest involving youth throughout the district or state, and PCC Bev Bridgewater solicited ideas to help Lions understand, participate and benefit from the Lions Club International Foundation. Bridgewater asked the group, “How can we help clubs serve more effectively and tell their story?” Areas covered by Bev included how we can grow, rebuild and start clubs; and what help is needed for club officers and future leaders.
