WALLA WALLA – A project to turn the Jensen Building, formerly the home of Macy’s, in downtown Walla Walla into a hotel has fallen through.
Walla Walla Development Services Director Preston Frederickson said building permits for the hotel/retail project were ready to be issued for the property at 54 E. Main St. However, when notified the permit was ready, the property owner informed the city that different options for the property were being explored.
In regards to the hotel/retail project, Frederickson said the city was dealing with Michael Hofeditz and an engineering firm. Frederickson did not give any further details on the engineering firm. Michael Hofeditz and his wife, Patty, own Walla Walla-based Callaway Properties Vacation Rentals. He did not respond to requests for comment.
The nearly 51,000 square foot Jensen Building, which was built in 1944, has housed the A.M. Jensen Company, Bon Marche, and Macy’s. In spring 2020, Macy’s closed the department store which had a long history in downtown Walla Walla.
“We look forward to working with would be purchasers in the redevelopment of the building/property in our vibrant downtown,” Frederickson added.
