HERMISTON – Steven Maurice Tompkins, 54, of Hermiston is in Umatilla County Jail facing a charge of attempted murder. Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston says officers responded to the 200 block of West Beech Avenue Tuesday night on reports of a dispute that might involve firearms.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found two people involved in a dispute.

“Both were immediately detained and then, through subsequent investigation, it was found that Mr. Tompkins was the primary aggressor and was taken into custody,” Edmiston said.

Edmiston said investigators consulted with the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office on the case. A knife and firearms were found at the scene.

“The victim had what appeared to be defensive wounds, but nothing life threatening,” Edmiston said.

Later Wednesday, two charges were added to the attempted murder charge. Tompkins also faces one count of second-degree assault and one count of attempted unlawful use of a weapon. His bail was set by the court at $60,000.
