Death of Washington State Penitentiary inmate under investigation

WALLA WALLA – The death of an incarcerated man at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla is under investigation.
Sayadeth Phouthavongxay, 29, died this past Saturday, a week after being allegedly assaulted in the West Complex yard by another inmate. The alleged attacker was taken into custody and placed into a restrictive housing unit at the prison.
The Washington State Department of Corrections is working closely with the Walla Walla Police Department to assist with the criminal investigation into this matter.
