PENDLETON – The Pendleton Development Commission has instructed city staff to study a proposal by the Pendleton Children’s Center to expand the city’s urban renewal district. It is working to open a daycare center in the old Pendleton Senior Center on Southwest Frazer Avenue and it wants to be in the urban renewal district so it could be eligible for loans and grants.
Public Works Director Bob Patterson, who attended the PDC meeting, said it’s not as simple as just deciding to make the district bigger.
“They can’t expand more than one percent of the original district boundary,” he said. “Staff is going to go back, make that assessment, and see what it looks like.”
He said the people planning the center are hoping to be able to open to some degree by September and one of their most pressing needs is a fire suppression system. They also want to expand into the old 3 R’s building so that they can eventually offer daycare services to 150 families.
