MISSION โ€“ The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation celebrated the opening of their new Workforce Development Center on Friday, marking the completion of an extensive two-year remodeling project.

The building, which previously served as the reservationโ€™s Governance Center and then as the Education Center, received an interior remodel, exterior upgrades, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements.

โ€œA facility that was built and established in the 90โ€™s needed some significant upgrades,โ€ said Public Works Director Justin Northern, noting the building had been mostly vacant for about six years. Northern added that the project included extensive electrical work, new data points, and updated LED lighting, though the floorplan largely remained the same.

Workforce Development Director Brandie Weaskus was extremely impressed with the renovations. Saying former students who were in school when the facility was the Education Center would be shocked to see it today. She says the greatest advantage of the new center is consolidating all workforce development services under one roof.

โ€œJust to have that ability to be face-to-face versus trying to make phone calls,โ€ she said.

The facility is located at the eastern intersection of Confederated Way and Mission Road.
