MISSION – The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation has made the decision that it will stick with a requirement that masks be worn whether people are vaccinated or not. Interim Executive Director Matthew Johnson said the goal is to make it simple.
“We’re requiring masks continue to be worn by everyone in all of our government offices, retail restaurant facilities on the reservation, as well as tribally-owned buildings that are off the reservation,” Johnson said.
The state has endorsed federal guidelines that state that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks. Johnson said employees should not be forced to be the mask police.
“We really don’t want to put the burden on our employees or staffs to have to try and determine whether somebody has been vaccinated or not,” he said.
CTUIR will regularly assess its COVID-19 guidelines and will announce any changes.
