MISSION – The unanimous endorsement of Chuck Sams as director of the National Park Service by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee was met with joy on the Umatilla Indian Reservation

“Tribal elders have been preparing chuck for this type of work his entire life,” Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation Board of Trustees Chairwoman Kat Brigham said. “From a young age, he learned he has a responsibility to take care of the land for our children’s children.”

Sams was one of five nominees to positions in the Biden administration to receive unanimous support from the committee.

“Mr. Sams will bring a fresh perspective to the National Park Service,” Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, the ranking Republican on the committee, said.

Sams’ nomination will now be considered by the full Senate. A date for that has not yet been determined.
