MISSION – A town hall regarding Tribal members feelings about the growing interest in making nuclear energy commercially available had been scheduled last month, but had to be postponed. It is being replaced with a virtual town hall.
CTUIR says the virtual meeting will be held on June 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to register in advance. Tribal members are also asked to take a short survey on the issue. Both the survey and the QR code to register for the town hall are at https://ctuir.org/news/survey-on-ctuir-and-nuclear-energy-now-available/.
The issue has arisen because of growing interest at the federal, state, and county interest in making small modular reactors commercially available.
CTUIR’s official police is strongly in opposition to nuclear activities that threaten Tribal values, rights, and resources, while recognizing the importance of establishing clear conditions, grounded in Tribal sovereignty, environmental stewardship, and economic justice, according to the announcement of the survey.
“It seeks to better guide Tribal staff’s actions and communications in real time to be actively involved and develop plans to protect Treaty rights better,” the statement reads.
