Cryptocurrency scam impacting Baker City residents

BAKER CITY — Cryptocurrency scams have been surfacing around Baker County. The Baker City Police Department reports that “Scammers are increasingly using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to steal money.” Officials say, “If someone tells you to pay using crypto, it’s a scam.”

To better protect local residents, the department provided information regarding a few tactics these scammers might use. BCPD said red flags include the caller urging a quick payment. They might claim they are experiencing fines, fees, or “account issues” of some sort, and then ask their victims to use a Bitcoin ATM.

Baker City Police remind the public to never send cryptocurrency to someone you don’t know. Take a moment to verify the credibility of the recipient before acting, and if something seems suspicious, check with a trusted source.
