PRAIRIE CITY – UPDATE: Prairie City Fire Chief Marvin Rynearson reports that the blaze is under investigation by three investigators—two of whom are Deputy State Fire Marshals, and one is an Oregon State Police Arson Investigator. Chief Rynearson said at this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined unless more is revealed in the investigations.
The fire consumed one whole building and another outbuilding. Included in the loss are the Superintendent’s Office, the break room, restrooms, and other offices. Chief Rynearson told our newsroom, “The fire didn’t progress much once crews arrived on scene.”
The chief was not aware of any injuries that occurred during the incident. He said one firefighter from Canyon City came to assist, along with 2 engines and the chief’s vehicle from the John Day Fire Department.
PREVIOUS: On July 4th, at approximately 10:09 p.m., multiple emergency agencies responded to the Prairie Wood Products sawmill in Prairie City for a structure fire. Very few details have been released at this time. Firefighters from the Prairie City Fire Department and John Day Fire Department battled the blaze that had overcome one of the mill’s buildings, while Grant County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police personnel secured the scene. A cause has not yet been released.
