PENDLETON – The Oregon Supreme Court has agreed to consider the case against convicted killer George West Craigen of Milton-Freewater. The Oregon Court of Appeals had overturned his conviction, saying police should have known due to an ongoing case that Craigen had an attorney, and should not have questioned him without his attorney present.

The Oregon Department of Justice quickly filed a request to the Oregon Supreme Court to hear the case and it was granted late last week.

“This issue will be heard in front of the Supreme Court in March,” Primus said. “It takes some time after arguments are made for the Supreme Court to make its decision.”

Primus said that’s great news for his office.

“It tells us that we’re still alive with the argument we made previously,” he said. “DOJ Appellate Division is going to be writing briefs to present making the arguments on behalf of the state. Defense counsel is doing the same.”

Primus has said that if the high court doesn’t rule in the state’s favor, he’s prepared to retry Craigen.
