PENDLETON – An inmate at the Umatilla County Jail recently cracked five windows. Capt. Thoren Hearn began to search for something tougher, and Umatilla County Commissioner John Shafer said he thinks Hearn found it.

“Capt. Hearn found a containment-grade clear polycarbonate,” Shafer said. “It’s unlike glass in that the polycarbonate will not shatter.”

The total cost for the replacement panes is $8,944.65 from Professional Plastics of Tualatin. Shafer, who was with the sheriff’s office before being elected commissioner, asked Hearn just how long the polycarbonate will last.

“Capt. Hearn and I grew up together, so I know how old he is,” Shafer said. “He told me, ‘I can tell you this much commissioner, it’ll outlast me here at the jail.’”
