COLLEGE PLACE – College Place Police Chief Troy Tomaras presented the department’s 2024 annual report to the city council Wednesday.
In 2024, compared to the year before, Tomaras reported arrests were up 72 percent (539 in 2024 and 313 in 2023) and traffic stops were up 48 percent (3.670 in 2024 and 2,471 in 2023).
Tomaras noted challenges for the community in 2024 continued to be shoplifting, thefts and other drug-related crimes. In 2024, burglaries were up 291 percent compared to last year’s numbers (47 in 2024 and 12 in 2023), thefts up 61 percent (170 in 2024 and 105 in 2023) and shoplifting was up 64 percent (105 in 2024 and 64 in 2023).
Last year (2024), Tomaras said there was a 323 percent increase in narcotics arrests compared to the previous year (55 in 2024 and 13 in 2023).
“A big jump in narcotics violations because the law got changed so that we can now arrest and charge for possession of controlled substances, which is a good thing for our community too,” Tomaras explained.
Tomaras said fentanyl continues to be a problem in the community. CPPD continues to partner with crisis and community caretakers to support those within the community who struggle with mental and chemical dependencies.
