COLLEGE PLACE – The College Place City Council will hold a workshop tonight (Tuesday) at 5:30 p.m. Discussion topics on the agenda include recycling and an update on the new water tower project.
City Administrator Mike Rizzitiello will share with the council the results of the recent recycling survey. Key takeaways from the 178 responses received are over 88 percent of respondents would use curbside recycling weekly if offered; top items residents want to recycle include cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic containers; about 61 percent of respondents would be willing to pay $9 a month for recycling; and over 51 percent of respondents view offering curb side recycling in the community as essential.
Basin Disposal used to offer city customers the option to recycle until the program was suspended in March 2018 by the city since items were not truly being recycled due to a change in national policy by China, where the recyclables were being shipped to be processed. The city has been exploring to either offer curb side recycling or create a centralized recycling depot to drop off recyclables then then let Basin Disposal haul it or do nothing at all.
As for the new water tower project, the city and JUB Engineers are working on the design for a new water tower (reservoir) to be built on city-owned land near the wastewater treatment plant. The city’s water service plan identifies a storage deficiency that this tower will take care of.
City staff and JUB Engineers will give a presentation about the project and provide an update. Tonight’s workshop will be held at College Place City Hall, 625 S. College Ave. and will be streamed on the city’s YouTube channel.
