WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla County Board of Commissioners meets today (Monday) at 1:15 p.m. and will consider a motion to divest interest in a historical stagecoach that the county owns that is currently in the possession of the Fort Walla Walla Museum where it has been on historical display since 1970.
The stagecoach at the Fort Walla Walla Museum is one of two historical stagecoaches owned by the county. The other stagecoach is in the possession of the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds.
Historical documents state that sometime after the death of stage line proprietor L.M. McMorris in 1915, these stagecoaches were gifted to Walla Walla County by McMorris’ heirs. However, the county cannot locate any property records stating that the stagecoach located at the Fort Walla Walla Museum is the property of the county, and the county has no interest or need to keep that stagecoach.
According to a resolution being considered today by the board of commissioners, it is in the public interest that the Fort Walla Walla Museum have full ownership and control of the stagecoach located at the museum. Additionally, the resolution states whatever property interests the county may have in the stagecoach at the museum would be transferred to the Fort Walla Walla Museum.
