UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners have approved ordering 15 new vehicles for various departments. If that sounds familiar, it’s because ordering vehicles is not the same things as actually getting them.

“As of this point, we haven’t seen the vehicles from 2021 nor the vehicles from 2022,” Board Chairman John Shafer said. “So, when Dodge went ahead and opened up for the 2023 vehicles, we went ahead and put in for that.”

Shafer said once one of the orders is filled, the county will cancel the other orders.

“At this point, I’m thinking I may be retired before we see vehicles,” Shafer, who has not announced any retirement plans, said.

Also at its meeting Wednesday, the board agreed to earmark $20,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds for the city of Helix as it works to renovate city hall. The board also agreed to the expansion of the Scheuning aggregate quarry and held off on approving repairing the emergency management trailer’s roof. The delay is to determine if the trailer itself is worth more than the roof repair, at almost $5,500, will cost.
