UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners is giving out $200,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding to youth sports complexes proposed in both Pendleton and Hermiston.

“The funding is from the Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Fund that we just received $2 million for,” Board Chairman John Shafer said.

The board voted unanimously to give $100,000 to the Round-Up City Development Corporation in Pendleton and $100,000 to Made to Thrive in Hermiston.

RCDC requested funding to help it obtain land for a regional youth sports complex. President Joseph Hull said that the complex will be used for tournaments for youth sports organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest. Full details about the project spearheaded by the economic development group will be announced in late November.

The grant to Made to Thrive will help that nonprofit organization build a sports complex named HEROS at the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center. The city of Hermiston will maintain the fields when they are completed. Made to Thrive will use sweat equity to help build the lighted fields for youth soccer, lacrosse, and football.
