UMATILLA COUNTY – In past years, the beginning of July means the start of the burn ban in Umatilla County. That’s not the case this year.

“Normally we do it on July 1st, but because of the wet weather, we’re allowing people to continue burns,” Board of Commissioners Chairman John Shafer said.

The board voted at its meeting Wednesday to have the ban go into effect a week from today on July 14. That does not mean it is fine to burn any day of the week until then.

People should check with the county daily to find out the status for the day. Wind and other weather conditions are studied before it is decided whether it’s a good or bad day to burn. The telephone number is 541-278-6397. Online it is at https://www.co.umatilla.or.us/departments/planning/burn-info.
