PENDLETON – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners has approved allowing landowners Alan and Nan Heilman permission to have homes on less than five acres of grazing land.
“The request for consideration was in regard to the provision for building homes on less than five acres,” Chairman George Murdock said.
Murdock said the board was endorsing the recommendation made by the Umatilla County Planning Commission. The permission is to allow existing dwellings on two to five acres of land.
The board chose to allow the couple an exemption without changing the ordinance itself. Murdock said that can set a precedent.
“It does mean that others can apply for it, but it didn’t make a blanket change,” he said.
