WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. and will consider a $117,000 construction contract with Priority One for installation of fencing and netting at the driving range at Veterans Memorial Golf Course. Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman said the netting around the driving range has exceeded its lifespan and is in such disrepair that it does not retain many balls.
It is also a priority to replace the netting as part of the new Wine Country Amphitheater, also located at the golf course. Gate openings are planned to be constructed to allow for the required egress for this summer’s upcoming concerts. The new fencing and netting will, it’s believed, improve the look of the driving range and amphitheater.
The council will also consider a resolution authorizing an annual cooperative agreement with the U.S. Forest Service. This is for protection of the Mill Creek Watershed in the amount of $99,617.28. This expense will be budgeted through the city’s water operations.
The city gets its surface water from the Mill Creek Watershed which consists of a protected, uninhabited area consisting of 36 square miles bordering Washington and Oregon. The contract provides for trail maintenance, seasonal staffing of the Table Rock Fire Lookout which oversees the watershed, and watershed patrols throughout the year to prevent illegal entry.
Also on the agenda, the council will consider the shoreline substantial permit for the Heritage Square project, which includes the renovation of the existing park at 116 E. Main St. to include new pedestrian pavements, planting areas, a new restroom building, an elevated stage platform, and a water spray play feature. The project will remove an existing parking lot and a picnic shelter as well as replace the restroom building.
