COLLEGE PLACE – The College Place City Council will discuss federal classification for certain roadways, consider grant applications for road and sidewalk projects and consider chlorination improvements to one of the city’s drinking water wells at its regular meeting tonight at 7 p.m.

The council will consider a motion adopting a resolution which permits Mayor Norma Hernandez to issue a letter to the Washington State Department of Transportation to request federal classification for portions of Northeast Damson Street, Southeast Scenic View Drive and Southeast Commercial Drive.

Getting roads federal classified qualifies them for state Transportation Improvement Board grant funding and has several sets of criteria including existing road characteristics, connection to landmarks, and traffic counts of around 300 vehicles a day or more.

The council will also consider adopting resolutions for TIB sidewalk program grant application for Northeast Lambert, Northeast Ash and Southeast Date sidewalks. Plus, a TIB arterial preservation program grant application for the Whitman Drive overlay project from Birch to Tremont is up for consideration.

A motion will also be considered by council to approve a design contract with RH2 for chlorination improvements at Well No. 3 in an amount not to exceed $21,500. According to city records, the appropriation will come from the water capital reserve fund, which has sufficient reserves to cover this project.

According to College Place Public Works, the chlorination at Well No. 3 is currently done with tablets. During hot weather, an employee must come on weekends to resupply the tablets. The city has been starting to transition to liquid chlorine because it  is more effective and easier to control. The city’s supplier can monitor the levels from their facility and the city’s water quality operator can monitor levels from a phone as well.

The meeting is streamed on the city’s YouTube channel. It is also available on Zoom. The ID number is 846 5998 5166.
