Council to tackle abandoned shopping carts

PENDLETON – The Pendleton Development Commission meets at 6 p.m. today (Tuesday). That will be followed by a Pendleton City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Both meetings have limited seating available and are also streamed via Zoom.

The PDC will hold a public hearing and vote on its proposed budget for the new fiscal year which begins July 1. The proposed budget for the urban renewal district totals $7,314,300.

The city council will have a first look at the Umatilla County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. The final draft of that plan has been submitted to the federal government. The city is required to adopt the resolution, as must all cities in Umatilla County.

Abandoned shopping carts have become a nuisance, and Pendleton Police Chief Charles Byram is requesting an ordinance that will create a protocol to handle the carts. The ordinance would include notification of the cart owners, the process for retrieving them, and a citation to be issued for violations.
