HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council meets at 7 p.m. today in the council chambers of Hermiston City Hall, 180 N.E. Second Street. The meeting will begin with a proclamation honoring Vietnam veterans.
A public hearing is on the agenda regarding a request to annex 3.64 acres of land on Northwest Sjoren Lane by owner Kelly Nobles. The land comprises four tax lot and two of them have single-family homes. The Hermiston Planning Commission has recommended annexing the property. Opposition has been expressed by those living in the area.
The second reading of an ordinance that would establish the Southwest Hermiston Urban Renewal Area is scheduled. The proposed district would focus on residential development on 350 acres at the intersection of Feedville Road and Highway 207. Several infrastructure projects are proposed that would bring water to that land.
The council will vote on approving an intergovernmental agreement with the cities of Umatilla, Stanfield, and Echo as well as with Umatilla County for the Practical Assistance through Transitional Housing Project – known as PATH. The state is providing a $1 million grant to build the complex that will provide transitional housing and those in need.
Approval of a lease with Made to Thrive for the front 20 acres of the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center property is also expected. The nonprofit organization is going to construct youth sports fields on the land, making use of its volunteer base to perform much of the work. When the fields are complete, they will be turned over to the Hermiston Parks and Recreation Department for maintenance.
