Council holds 2022 property tax hearing

WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council meets tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30. On the agenda, a public hearing on property tax levies for 2022, which council is required to adopt by November 30.
In addition to this levy for 2022 regular property tax, staff will present council with ordinances that levy property taxes to fund the 2022 payments for the unlimited tax general obligation bonds which fund the fire department facilities, the police facilities project costs, and Veterans’ Memorial Pool facilities. Those levies will amount to $300,000 or $0.0885 per $1,000 of assessed value for the fire department facilities bond, $800,000 or $0.2361 per $1,000 of assessed value for the police department facilities bond, and $451,070 or $0.1331per $1,000 of assessed value for the Veterans’ Memorial Pool facilities bond.
Council will also consider a request by city staff to provide City Manager Nabiel Shawa the authority to approve individual property right-of-way acquisition amounts in excess of $20,000 for the city’s Alder-Poplar project. The project will reconstruct Alder Street from Merriam to Palouse, Poplar Street from Alder to Colville, and Palouse Street from Poplar to Alder. Three traffic signals at the intersections of Alder and Park, Alder and Palouse, and Poplar and Palouse will be removed and replaced with roundabouts.
Lane reconfigurations will include bike lanes, outside of the roundabout area. The project also includes the installation of a rectangular rapid flashing beacon and crossing improvements at the intersection of Alder Street and Howard Street. Right-of-way agreements are needed from private property owners to construct the planned improvements. There are a total of four private parcels that will be impacted.
