WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council unanimously approved Wednesday the shoreline substantial development permit and shoreline height variance for construction of a proposed multi-use development at 170 N. Ninth Ave. on the south side of the Mill Creek channel. The project consists of a first-floor hotel and commercial use and second through fourth floor apartments totaling about 94,753 square feet.

Due to the location of the proposed development, the building site is subject to the provisions of the city’s shoreline management master program. This location is also within the high intensity shoreline designation area, which does permit commercial use and upper-level residential development.

In October, Andrew Galloway with Galloway Architecture of Spokane applied for a shoreline substantial development permit and shoreline building height variance. Since that time, a public hearing has been completed and the Walla Walla Planning Commission found the building’s design follows the zoning requirements and recommended approval of the project to the city council.

“There are 73 total units in the building, plus two large leasable commercial spaces,” Galloway said.

While the multi-use development is still in the design phase, it’s anticipated to provide housing for approximately 70 to 100 people. Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for April.
