MITCHELL – The Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office reports a cougar has been killed near Mitchell.
According to a social media post from the agency, on Saturday, a local resident’s dog was attacked by a small female cougar outside their residence. The cougar was dispatched by the dog’s owner during the encounter. The dog sustained minor injuries, but otherwise appeared to be in good spirits.

Information Release: Mitchell Area
On 3/30/2024 a local residents dog was attacked by a small skinny female cougar outside of their residence. The cougar was dispatched by the dogs owner during the encounter. The dog sustained minor injuries but appeared to be happy. The Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office responded and took possession of the cougar. We are working with ODFW and OSP to have the cougar examined due to the location and type of incident.
There is no active known threat to the Mitchell community at this time. We still encourage the community to be aware of their surroundings and keep an extra eye on their animals.
