PENDLETON – Pendleton High School senior Chas Corbett is in the Army now. He recently accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Corbett was nominated for the academy by Congressman Cliff Bentz (R-Ontario) along with 14 others in the Second Congressional District.
He is preparing to report for Plebe Summer on June 26. Described as basically a boot camp, Plebe Summer is filled with rigorous physical and mental training.
Corbett is the son of Robb and Elizabeth Corbett. In an earlier interview he said that he has known he wanted to serve in the military for a long time but didn’t realize until his junior year that there was a possibility that he could be nominated to a military academy.
“I was a junior and a recruiter asked me to apply,” he said.
As part of the nomination process, Corbett was interviewed by Bentz’s Service Academy Nomination Board. It is comprised of retired and active-duty military officers. The board decides which applicants should be nominated based on academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and character.
West Point is the oldest military academy in the United States. Tuition is paid by the Army in exchange for an active duty commitment upon graduation, generally as a second lieutenant.
