Cooking fire spreads causing property damage

NYSSA – (Information from the Nyssa Police Department) On October 20, 2021 at 9:11 AM, your Nyssa Police and Fire Departments responded with a Malheur County Sheriff’s Office deputy to the 100 block of E. 1st St regarding a structure fire. Your officers learned that the fire consumed sheds and property behind the vacant home and did damage to the outside of the house. The fire did damage property of a home nearby. Thankfully, no one or any animals were hurt.

Through subsequent investigation, your Nyssa officers learned that a local Nyssa transient had set up camp behind the home and made a campfire the night before to cook his steaks. The wind the following morning rekindled the fire, which caused the damaged. As a result, the suspect was arrested and lodged at the Malheur County Jail for Reckless Burning and six outstanding warrants.
