Cook Memorial Library lets kids explore native innovation with new summer exhibit

LA GRANDE

The Cook Memorial Library has once again partnered with the Museum of Natural Culture and History to host a new traveling summer exhibit, Native Innovation. A celebration of the culture, history, and unique engineering of Oregon’s First Nations, Native Innovation showcases the ingenuity, problem-solving skills and creative prowess of the state’s Native American tribes over a thousand years. As written by Children’s Librarian Mackenzie Isakk

“We are so excited to have another traveling exhibit from the Museum of Natural and Cultural History (MNCH)! This summer, MNCH has provided us with an extraordinary exhibit celebrating the knowledge, creativity, and resourcefulness of Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. It can be challenging to get quality programming and exhibits in eastern Oregon due to travel expenses for visitors, so we are very grateful to MNCH for putting together and sharing such incredible exhibits like this one and last summer’s Oregon’s Dino-Story. Take advantage of this opportunity and come learn about sandal weaving, clam digging, canoe making, and more! You don’t want to miss this wonderful exhibit!”

The exhibit opened to the public on July 10 and will remain at the library through August 6. Exhibit open hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10am—12pm. and 3pm—5pm. each day. Drop-in hours are 10am—12pm and 3pm—5pm on Mondays and 9am.—11am on Saturdays.

For those that miss the exhibit this time around, Native Innovation will later be hosted at the Harney County Library in Burns from November 6 through December 3, 2024.
