COLLEGE PLACE – Construction at the future site of College Place’s drinking water well at East Whitman Drive and Southeast Maple Street has been paused. The city is awaiting the shipment of custom-made mechanical equipment that has been stalled by supply chain issues.
City Administrator Mike Rizzitiello said the mechanical equipment should be delivered in the next month or so. Once the items are on site, the contractor, Nelson Construction will install the mechanical equipment, turn on the well and clean up the active construction site.
Rizzitiello said he’s hopeful Well No. 6 will be in use by this fall as the project started in 2017 and was originally supposed to be wrapped up last year. In the meantime, the city is exploring potential uses for the northern portion of land next to the well site which contains the well’s overflow ditch. Due to federal regulations, this portion of city-owned land cannot be used for other types of development.
“Our citizen-led parks, arbor and recreation board, they are working with a consultant to identify potential park usage for this site,” Rizzitiello said.
The College Place Parks, Arbor, and Recreation Board will meet Friday, July 21 at 8 a.m. in the College Place Fire Department’s Training Room to discuss this issue. The meeting will also be streamed on the city’s YouTube channel.
