BAKER CITY – (From the Baker School District Newsletter) Bill Markgraf, who is the instructor for the Construction Trades Class at BTI, was contacted by Bill Mitchell from the Baker Heritage Museum about building a gate entrance for the museum’s new exhibit to replicate the historical entrance to Chinatown in Baker City.
Mr. Markgraf said, “I went down and looked at the project. They presented me with the plan of what they wanted to do, and I took it back to my Construction 3 & 4 class for consideration. We had to design it so that we could build it in the shop and then transport it to the museum for installation.”
Mr. Markgraf asked for the assistance of Holly Coleman, the art teacher at Baker High School, to draw the curved ends on the top of the gate.
“We built and painted the gate in the High School shop, transported it to the museum, then completed and installed it on site,” he added. “The museum was very happy with the final product, and we all were invited to the soft opening of the exhibit,” Bill said.
The Director of the Baker Heritage Museum, Lynn Weems, said that she values all of the partnerships to make this exhibit come to fruition. She was thrilled to be able to partner with Baker Technical Institute and the students on this project, as well.
“It was wonderful. They did a fantastic job!” Lynn said. Baker Heritage Museum is open for the season. On Monday-Saturday, they are open from 10-4 p.m., and on Sunday from Noon-4 p.m
