ONTARIO – (Release from the Oregon Department of Transportation) A 200-yard-long, 100-yard-wide by 30-foot-deep crescent shaped cut was created above Interstate 84 when gravity and soil conditions caused the hillside to move. The slide was discovered in early February. Repairs to this active slide adjacent to the eastbound lanes of I-84 near milepost 359.3, 17 miles west of Ontario, is scheduled to begin this week. The contractor has begun moving equipment to the site and expects to start excavation next week.
Travelers on I-84 eastbound will see right lane shoulder closures the first few weeks, followed by lane closures later this summer.
Please slow down and watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway to access the work site. The slide is located on a hill and around a corner, so visibility is limited.
