UNION & WALLOWA COUNTIES – Since the end of October, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has reported new wolf depredations for Union and Wallowa Counties, both confirmed, and unconfirmed but probable.
The first depredation was initially investigated on November 4, 2024, and occurred on a 5,000-acre private land pasture in the Butte Creek Area of Wallowa County. The depredation resulted in the injury of a single 7-month-old calf and is believed to have occurred 4-6 days prior to investigation. The depredation was confirmed, but was listed as “unknown, within Middle Fork Pack area.”
The second depredation was initially investigated on November 18, 2024, and occurred on a 1700-acre private land pasture in the Shamrock area of Wallowa County. The depredation resulted in the death of a single 8-month-old calf and is believed to have occurred less than 24 hours prior to investigation. The depredation was confirmed and has been attributed to an as of yet unnamed group of wolves.
The third depredation was initially investigated on November 19, 2024, and occurred on a 100-acre private land pasture in the Beagle Creek area of Union County. The Depredation resulted in the death of a single 8-month-old calf and is believed to have occurred less than 24 hours prior to investigation. The depredation was confirmed and attributed to the Frazier Mountain Pack.
The final depredation reported as of the time of writing was initially investigated on December 2, 2024, and occurred on a 30-acre private land pasture in the Flora area of Wallowa County. The depredation resulted in the death of a single yearling cow and is believed to have occurred on November 28, 2024. The depredation is only listed as probable, with it tentatively being attributed to the Grouse Flats Pack as of the time of writing.
