MILTON-FREEWATER – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners has approved Harry Johnson Plumbing and Excavation of Walla Walla to replace the bridge over the Walla Walla River at Harris Park. Chairman John Shafer says the 2020 flood damaged the bridge beyond repair.
“The original bridge actually washed away,” he said. “We put a temporary bridge in, which is a flat rail car.”
Shafer said that replacement was loaned to Umatilla County by Columbia County and will be returned when the new bridge is in place. The work is being paid for with funding from the Oregon Highway and Bridge Program. Shafer said if FEMA dollars come through for the work, the county will reimburse the state for its funds.
The low bid on the project from Harry Johnson was for $600,397.50. It was one of seven companies bidding for the job on the south fork of Walla Walla River Road. The highest bid, from MJ Hughes Construction was for $1,074,466.
