Communities in Grant, Baker and Malheur counties will see construction crews in October, November

GRANT, BAKER & MALHEUR COUNTIES โ€“ (Release from ODOT) Eastern Oregonโ€™s efforts to bring ADA curb ramps up to current standards continues with its next round of projects. The communities of Canyon City, John Day, Adrian and Huntington will see construction activities this fall and winter. These improvements mean increased safety and more seamless access for people who walk, bike or roll.

All schedules are tentative and subject to change.

Grant County

Work is now scheduled to begin late October in Canyon City and John Day. The contractor, Western United Civil Group, had planned to start in Dayville but changed locations to accommodate scheduling conflicts.

Site surveys and saw cutting is currently in progress. Crews will then begin curb ramp demolition, followed by construction of new ramps in Canyon City. They expect to begin curb ramp construction in John Day before winter weather sets in.

Other communities in this project include Dayville, Long Creek, Mt. Vernon and Prairie City. All sites in Grant County are scheduled for completion by September 2024. For more information and details, visit the Grant County curb ramp project website.

Jordan Valley, Ontario, Huntington and Adrian

The contractor, HP Civil, began mid-October in Adrian by installing temporary signs and erosion control. Curb ramp demolition and construction is expected to begin the week of October 23.

The contractor plans to have another team begin work in Huntington the week of Oct. 31. Work crews will set up temporary signs and saw cutting to prepare for curb ramp demolition.

This project includes the communities of Ontario and Jordan Valley, which will not see construction until 2024. Work in these communities is expected to finish August 2024. More information and details can be found by visiting the Jordan Valley, Ontario, Huntington and Adrian project website.

Burns and Hines

The contractor, Wildish Construction, decided to wait until spring 2024 to begin construction. They are finishing other projects in the area and have limited staff to focus on this project. The damp and cool weather early in the fall also contributed to their decision.

The contractor expects to begin work early spring 2024 and timing depends on the weather. Visit the Burns and Hines curb ramp project website for more information.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts
During construction in all communities, travelers and residents can expect the following:
โ€ขIntermittent flaggers with lane and shoulder closures.
โ€ขPossible side street closures.
โ€ขADA-accessible pedestrian detours around all work zones.
โ€ขAccess to all businesses will remain open.
Drivers and pedestrians are advised to watch for work crews and equipment.

Other curb ramp projects in Eastern Oregon

In 2022, we began curb ramp upgrades in thirteen communities. That work continued into 2023, and we finished three projects this summer โ€“ Joseph, Wallowa and Lostine, and Pendleton are now complete.

Contractors on Baker City and Umatilla and Morrow County projects are in the final stages of contract work and expect to finish by November. We ask that travelers watch for work crews and equipment in these communities for the next couple of weeks.
