WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla County Board of Commissioners meets today (Monday) at 10 a.m. Commissioners will consider adopting an agreement with the Washington State Military Department Emergency Management Division for a $53,638 United States Department of Homeland Security grant. They will also consider a solid waste treatment agreement.

The DHS grant is provided to state and local jurisdictions to enhance the capability to prevent, deter, respond to, and recover from incidents of terrorism and/or catastrophic events. In an October 8th memo to the board of commissioners, Walla Walla County Emergency Management Director Liz Jessee wrote that the funding will be used primarily for salary and benefits as well as goods and services. There is no local match required for this grant. This is an annually recurring grant that Emergency Management has been receiving since post 9-11.

Commissioners will also consider approving a solid waste financial assistance agreement between the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Walla Walla County Department of Community Development. As part of the agreement, the Walla Walla County Department of Community Development will spend $169,376 to enforce solid waste codes, and expects to perform 20 facility inspections, and expects to resolve 200 non-facility related solid waste complaints.

Commissioners have resumed in person public meetings, but also continue to host the meetings via WebEx. The access code is 146 784 0290.
