COLLEGE PLACE – College Place Public Schools has secured a $185,550 state grant to overhaul the west playground at Davis Elementary School.
The funding, provided through the Washington State Healthy Kids – Healthy Schools grant, will focus on removing barriers to play for students with disabilities. Plans include replacing rubber chips on the K–1 playground with ADA-compliant, wheelchair-friendly surfacing and adding inclusive play equipment and shade structures.
The district also plans to construct a new preschool play area tailored for its youngest learners, featuring developmentally appropriate and mobility-compliant equipment.
“Every child deserves a safe place to move, play, and build friendships,” said Board President Eva Brown.
The district will provide matching funds to complete the project, which is a board priority. Construction is scheduled for this summer while students are out of school. District officials said the upgrades support local wellness policies by increasing access to physical activity before, during, and after school.
