Closure order reduced on McCully Fire; repair work continues

SUMPTER — The latest update for the McCully Fire near Sumpter was released by the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The forest also reduced the closure order. Find information and a link to the latest closure map in the official updates below:

Over the past several days, firefighters have observed only occasional wisps of smoke within the fire’s interior. According to Incident Commander Eli Shorey, “The thick duff, tree stumps, and big logs that are smoldering and producing visible smoke do not pose any threat to containment. We got more rain across the fire area yesterday, and any precipitation we get helps cool off the remaining scattered hotspots.”

“Nearly all the work we’re doing now is repair,” Shorey continued. “For example, we’re repairing dozer-constructed firelines, installing water bars, and moving logs off the contingency firelines in Pole Creek and Deer Creek. There’s still a lot of heavy equipment, including logging trucks, working on the roads in and outside the fire perimeter.”

Containment remains at 91 percent due to a section of uncontained fire perimeter in the North Fork John Day Wilderness, which for safety reasons, firefighters are not accessing directly. The fire perimeter is not active and is expected to remain within its current footprint. Approximately 85 personnel remain assigned to the incident.
