WALLA WALLA – Jesse Castro, known throughout the Walla Walla community for standing on street corners, waving to passing motorists and helping bag items and push shopping carts at local grocery stores, died early Thursday morning. He was 58.

Born in Walla Walla, Castro spent most of his life there. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and a few weeks ago he was admitted to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a stomach infection.

Castro loved riding his bicycle and over the years community members supported his passion by contributing to repairs and new bike purchases.

“I will miss his smile, his humor, his love and his ability to brighten our days,” longtime friend Liz Pierce said.

Arrangements are pending.
