City’s historic district plan goes under review

WALLA WALLA – The city of Walla Walla’s nomination for a National Historic District downtown will be reviewed by the Washington State Advisory Council on Historic Preservation at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The council’s recommendation will then be forwarded to the National Park Service, which oversees the National Register of Historic Places and is the final decision-maker.

The nomination includes the area generally bounded by Rose Street, Palouse Street, Third Avenue and the alley between Alder and Poplar streets. Properties that contribute to the National Register District are eligible for federal income tax credits when qualified rehabilitations is completed.

In the fall of 2019, the city of Walla Walla was awarded a $17,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. The grant provided funding to hire a consultant to prepare the nomination application.
