PENDLETON – It’s time to check the condition of Pendleton’s streets. Five years ago, the city’s pavement condition data base was rated to be ‘fair.’ It’s trying to reach ‘good.’ At that time, it was estimated the city needed to spend about $2.4 million a year to bring its streets to good.
“We’ve actually exceeded that because we’ve spent a lot of urban renewal dollars on streets downtown,” Mayor John Turner said. “We want to see if that prediction five years ago is actually making a difference.”
The council has approved working on a contract with Capitol Asset & Pavement Services, Inc. of Silverton. That’s the same company that performed the pavement condition index studies in 2013 and 2018. Turner said the company has proven to be thorough.
“They will come in and they will go down every single street and judge the width of the cracks, look at the crumbling asphalt, and they will give us a report,” he said.
